20 Wishes

2011 didn't end on a good note for my family and myself. On December 7th my mom was admitted to the hospital with pnumonia(sp?) beginning the longest and hardest three weeks of my life. Beginning with the pnumonia and then adding complications of several TIA's, several heart attacks, and a septic gallbladder, my mom passed away on December 20th, 2011.

During the time that I spent in the hospital, hoping, praying, holding her hand, holding my dad and my brothers, I also read A LOT. One of the books I read was "Twenty Wishes" by Debbie Macomber, if you haven't read it, it is a very sweet story about a group of widows (probably not the best thing to read while watching someone die.) While the story has it's round about plots, the main premise is about doing things that you never made time for because the business of life in general takes charge. Over the past few days I've really been thinking about what "wishes" I may have that I've put away on a shelf somewhere waiting for "someday." The story stresses that you need to think of "wishes" not things you "should/need" to do. Things like eating better, losing weight, balancing the budget, etc, etc. We have to or should do those things, but what about the little things that get put off?

I decided to put my 20 wishes out in the open, and I challenge you to do the same thing. If you do post your 20 wishes please link you post so that I can share it with you. Now I've had time to think about my wishes and my list still isn't complete, but here's my beginning of 20 wishes.

1. Stand beside the ocean with someone I love and watch the sunset.
2. Make a quilt.
3. Knit a pair of socks.
4. Get back into scrapbooking my favorite memories.
5. Go on a Whale watching cruise and get close to these majestic creatures.
6. Have dinner with my brothers at least 4 times a year.
7. Go fishing with my dad.
8. Spend a romantic weekend with my husband at a unique bed and breakfast.
9. Take a yoga class.
10. Go dancing with Kait.
11. Play a video game with Jacob.
12. Walk in the woods with Ben.
13. Get back on a horse and ride.
14. Design an Angel garden in memory of family and friends I've lost.

I used some punch art to make my mittens, added some felt for the fuzzy, and the background is fabric adhered to c/s then embossed with the vintage wallpaper folder for the warmth.

Geez can you believe August is half over? I'm preparing to send all three of my babies off to college or "CL5" for Kait. While on one hand I'm looking forward to getting back into a routine, on the other I'm not sure I'm ready for an almost completely empty nest, sigh....

My young neice DD went back to Texas and my neice Em has landed a job in Oregon. Our family is blowing to the four corners it seems, sigh....

Last week we found out that four of my co-workers will be off on medical leaves, 2 of them with cancer, 1 with a spinal cord surgery, and the other with an inflammatory disease that has left her unable to work, sigh....

And to add to it, in my infinite wisdom I decided to tear apart my entire craft corner to clean and re-organize. In looking back this wasn't such a good week for that, sigh....

However, on a bright note I did enjoy playing along with the dirty dozen in the annual Dare to get Dirty challenges over on SCS. Thankfully I had the foresight to make some "thinking of you" and generally cheerful cards because it's looking like I'll be needing them!

Here's a Center step card made with our Paisley Print DSP, I'm pretty pleased with this one!

My Mingler pals will recognize the "rules" right off, but I had to literally laugh out loud when my Kaitlin came to me out of the blue one day and announced "Mom, Boys are DUMB!" Yep, sweetie they can be, however they're still an important part of our lives. While Jeff and I were camping a few weeks ago and I was waiting for him while he was in class I set out to make this for Katie. When I got home she and I finished it together and this is what she came up with.

Paper Beads with DSP - Some of you may remember that I promised a tutorial several months ago for this fun project. It's taken a while because I couldn't share it until Beate had it posted on SCS, but here it is now! Be on the look out for my fancy fold tutorial as well!

Paper Beads are a fun way to use up scraps of DSP, and it’s not just for crafters, it’s a fun “mommy & me” project to do with the “littles” as well!

Supplies: Pretty Designer Paper, Toothpicks, Glue, Diamond Glaze, Bone Folder, Scissors/paper trimmer

NOTE: Diamond Glaze gives the paper beads a nice shiny/glassy look, however you could use Modge Podge, Shimmer Paint, or VersaMark and UTEE to finish the beads as well, anything that dries clearly could be used.

Step 1: Cut DSP into ½” x 4” strips

Step 2: “Curl” the DSP using your bone folder, this will help as you begin to wrap your beads.

Step 3: Put a thin strip of glue on one end of the DSP. You don’t need a lot of glue, but don’t skimp either, a thin line of glue on the last two inches should do.

Step 4: Beginning with the end with no glue, start wrapping the DSP tightly around the toothpick. The glue will ooze out as you get to that end, just wipe off excess glue. (Tip, you may want to keep wet wipe next to you to wipe any excess glue off your fingers)

Step 5: Place toothpick across a narrow container (SU Build a brad container used here) or poke the toothpick into a piece of Styrofoam if you have some.

Step 6: Continue rolling beads until you have the number you want.

Step 7: Place a quarter size dollop of Diamond Glaze (SU Crystal Effects used here) onto a disposal plastic “palette” (An old CD or plastic lid works great)

Step 8: Carefully roll the bead into the diamond glaze to coat, being careful not to get any onto your toothpick.
TIP: You can get really creative now, try wrapping metallic string/embroidery floss, sprinkling glitter, mini confetti, etc, on while the diamond glaze is still wet to give the beads some texture or added dimension.

Step 9: Once you have all your beads rolled allow them to dry (walk away, do the dishes, watch a movie, do not attempt to heat dry diamond glaze it just won’t dry looking right)

Step 10: After at least one hour come back and carefully slide your beads off your toothpicks.

Step 11: String your beads as you wish

Step 12: Use beads as a decorative element

Option 2, Step 1: Cut DSP into triangles 4” long by 1” across at the widest edge.

Option 2, Step 2: Roll as stated in steps 2 – 10 above starting with the one inch edge.

Option 2, Step 3: You’ll have long, tapered beads this way

Option 2, Step 4: String and use!

Life Gets In The Way

Sorry I've been MIA for a while, life gets busy and something has to give you know?

Anyway hopefully it'll be a little peaceful for a while anyway! I haven't made to much this summer and I'm in bad need of a girls night of stamping! However, it's a couple of new SU! goodies! The first is the new Doilies set, I embossed the doilies with white E.P. onto vellum, then colored from behind with the in-color markers, then ran it through the Bigshot with the dots folder, sounds like a lot but it's really easy. The second blends the old and the new with the new in-colors with the daisies set, if I ever have time to just play I think I'm really going to enjoy these new colors!

Peach Parfait, Pear Pizzazz, Poppy Parade, & Daffodil Delight is the June Creative Crew color combo (can we say bright?) I used my Manhattan Flower B/S folder with vellum for the roses, did a watercolor wash with Peach Parfait and shimmer paint, used Bella Toile in the background, and used the sentiment from Sense of Time - whew! She be busy!

Swiming or Flying Turtle?

Here's the story, we were challenged to make something inspired by Davy Jones Locker or Under The Sea. I decided to use this digi image to make my daughters birthday card, however she saw it before I had a chance to hide it and she laughed at it asking why I had a turtle flying in the sky above the trees.....

I tried to explain it's a swimming sea turtle and those are coral and sea grass, she continued to laugh and and said it still looked like a flying turtle.....

She got a flying turtle for a birthday card anyway!!!!!

I don't use Alcohol ink very often as it is not a product my beloved SU doesn't offer, however we were challenged to do an alcohol in technique. I simply did an alcohol ink Polished Stone (which really is much more vivid than water based ink!) on a cup shaped card, then embossed the Damask stamp from SU onto it.

I've recently re-connected with my best friend from high school! Diane and I lost touch about 5 years after graduation, but recently found each other again on Facebook, after another 25 years had passed (yay for global social networking!) Anyway, we were challenged to use Wood on a card, I choose the SU wood sheet scraps I had to make a "faux paneling" look & the Tim Holtz Caged Bird die to make a birthday card for Diane. Everything else on this card is SU, it's kind of CAS in design, yet there's a lot of little details if you look for them.

Ahhh Spring, time for baseball, tree climbing, hiking, and all other things "boy." This was a club project for a boy's b'day card, seems like everyone has problems with pre-teen/teenage boys! So it was Woodland Walk DSP to the rescue with a freehanded baseball bat with linen thread on the handle, a punched baseball with Real Red marker stitching, and a red crimped paper strip - Hope you likey!

Recycled Signs

I've had these wooden signs a while. Originally they had a vintage bathroom theme on them. I stripped that off, repainted them, mod podged the Woodland Walk DSP, added the Decor Element word, some older SU twill ribbon & felt flowers, then some charms and punches for embellishments. I think I may give this to my niece as a house warming gift ;)

Popping Daffodil

Most people think of red when doing Black & White with a "pop" of color - I love Yellow with it (which is about the only time I like yellow!) Daffodil Delight is a nice yellow to play with! I don't remember where the ribbon is from but I knew I wanted the ruffled Organdy you get when you "melt" the ribbon with your heat tool. Everything else on this card is SU!

This month the SCS Creative Crew challenged us to recycle or re-use something. I had some clear cubes, leftover from Heaven only knows what, I used the Ice Cream Parlor DSP, buttons, and ribbon to turn them into gift baskets! I also did some tag art to go along with them.

How about an elegant, vintage Cuppie? I got the template for this sweet box from Kelleigh Ratzlaff, at TheDigiChick.

I used SU Love Letters DSP for the box, Red Glitter paper for the cherry, and added some lace to bring it altogether. The box is quite roomie and would easily hold a real cuppie as long as you didn't do mile high frosting like I tend to do - I mean everyone knows that cake is just a means of conveying frosting to your mouth right?

Our purpose this month was to re-use, re-purpose, re-cycle, to do a small part of preserving our planet, our history, and saving a piece of our memories to past onto the next generation.

This was a make and take that I did at a local crop. I made my own background by stamping the Sal-A-Bration set called Bliss. The tag is the rectangle sizzlet, with the Boho Blossoms punch, the bird on a branch punch ends the journaling. I've included both pages, then a photo of the two page spread

Faux Ceramic Beads

One of thhe SU Creative Crew challenge this month was to use Beads, Baubles, Trinkets, Chains, and Charms. Well I didn't have any so I had to get creative indeed! I made paper beads! I used some of my scraps of DSP and made my beads that dangle from my seam binding, Dyed Crocheted flower, and pearl.

My shabby heart is lovin' this Botanial Suite from SU! Be on the look out for a tutorial on my faux beads in the upcoming future ;)

I've Been Adopted!

My SCS/Michigan Mingle friend Debra decided to adopt me this month! Since my upline no longer gets together to stamp, Debra sent me all the supplies and directions to make these two projects. Now the bracelet she sent me a photo of to help me along, the card no photo.... So I'm sitting there looking at all these pieces thinking to myself "what's this supposed to look like?" When all of sudden across the entire state of Michigan I swear I hear Debra's voice saying "look chickie I gave you all the supplies you need, you're more than capable of designing it, now go forth and create!" So I don't know if this is what Debra's original design looked like, but I used every single supply she sent me and didn't waste one single inch of anything!

Wanna Know What I've Been Doing?

Well besides the holiday madness like everyone else! For the last month or so over on Splitcoast > http://www.splitcoaststampers.com < I've been working on a new project for the largest online public gallery for Stampin'Up! products.

Basically a group of demo's will be bringing the SCS general public a monthly showcase of Stampin' Up! works of art! There is a team of 7 demo's, plus 3 coordinators involved in bringing this all new showcase to you. This new showcase is called the "Creative Crew." The 7 demo's will have four themes or focus areas each month to work with. I can't tell you everything but I can say that everyone should pop into the SCS gallery on Saturday 1/1/2011 at 1:00 (est) When you get there simple type "creativecrew" into the gallery search bar and a world of wonderful SU should appear to you!

The great thing about this is not only will EVERYONE get to see these projects, but demonstrators are encouraged to share these "themes/focus" areas with you and you to can play along!

I cannot share any complete projects with you because I do not want to steal the Crew's thunder, however I can give you a sneak peek and you can try to figure out what our four themes/focus areas are for this month. Don't worry if you can't figure it out, I'll be sharing them with you on Saturday.
